\n \ nAccording to an ancient legend, Buddha invited all the animals of creation to a grand New Year's party and announced that the order of the animals in the zodiac would be determined by when they arrived at his party. \n The rat, the buffalo, the tiger, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster, the dog, the pig—and the hare—took part. It was said that the hare was proud and a little haughty because of his speed and that he always made fun of the buffalo because it was so slow. The hare left early, and when he arrived, there were no other animals for miles around. Since the hare was sure he would be first, he lay down nearby and took a nap. When he woke up, three other animals had already arrived. One of them was the buffalo, which he had always looked down on. This made him more modest and less haughty. The hare has been the fourth sign of the Chinese zodiac ever since.
